Project: Fighting Stereotypes: Identity,Gender

One day Pre Summit workshop organised with the support of UNIFEM & UNESCO to examine gender stereotyping in programing, advertising etc.in broadcasting.

Objectives

to be able to examine

  • the role of the media in perpetuating stereotypes and how to reverse the trend,
  • stereotyping in media advertising and develop solutions for reversing the trend on stereotyping in advertising,
  • understand the relevance of gender targets in media,
  • the need for media education for long term approach to development of women's issues.

Aims
The aim of the workshop is to examine gender stereotyping in programming, advertising etc. and to exchange ideas, develop solutions to reverse the trend on stereotyping in the TB broadcasting. In addition, the participants will be able to exchange first hand information about the gender stereotyping in general in the media.

Profile of the the Participants
Senior producers with an interest on gender stereotyping and/or those in TV advertising from TV broadcasting organisations.

Content
Presentations will focus on the following themes:

  • Gender portrayal in television and the changing media landscape: gender stereotypes,
  • Understanding the relevance of gender targets in the media,
  • Men and women as equal partners in development,
  • Gender Mainstreaming in the media,
  • Research on gender mainstreaming in broadcasting organizations: Code of Ethics,
  • Media and education for Long term approach to development of women's issues,
  • Stereotyping in media advertising:develop possible solutions for reversing the trend on stereotyping in TV advertising,
  • Developing a new thinking about fair gender portrayal in Television: The way forward.
